The Lincoln Highway, which goes from New York City to San Francisco, was formally dedicated in 1913. It was pieced together from existing roads and trails. Most of it wasn’t paved and a trip across country could take 20 – 30 days. Interstate 80 has replaced the Lincoln Highway through most of Wyoming. The Lincoln head originally marked the highest point of the highway but was moved to Interstate 80 in 1969.
The rest area is huge. We had been planning on camping in the Pole Mountain area of Medicine Bow National Forest which can be accessed from the rest area. However, since it looked like it might rain and we didn’t want to be driving on wet dirt roads, we spent the night in the rest area. Truck parking is separate from the car and RV parking so it’s quieter than normal. There are three sections for cars and RVs. We parked in the first one which is signed for RVs so there was little car traffic.
The next day we drove along Happy Jack Road through the Pole Mountain grasslands which is a good alternative to I-80 between Laramie and Cheyenne. The area is crisscrossed with dirt roads and is very popular for all types of activities. We saw many spots where we could have camped and will definitely camp here when we come this way again.
