Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

IMG_8288   After visiting the wonderful museums in Washington D.C. we were prepared to be underwhelmed by this museum. What a surprise! The quality and variety of the artwork is impressive and on par with the Cleveland Art Museum - a beautiful museum that we really enjoyed.

Paul Mellon and his sister Ailsa Bruce, heirs to the Mellon Bank fortune, and Sydney and Frances Lewis, founders of furniture and jewelry stores, provided major funding for the museum. They, along with other local philanthropists, donated their personal art collections which accounts for the rather eclectic range of art - Faberge eggs, Art Deco furniture, American and European paintings, pre-Columbian ceramics, English silver, African and Asian art, modern art, and everything in-between.

   The museum is accessible.

The only parking is in a garage so we parked next door at the Virginia Historical Society.  Signs state that the lot is for the historical society only but, as it wasn’t busy, there was plenty of room for our RV.  Museum  37.5556, -77.47442
