Leaving Elephant Butte and Spending the night at Sumner Lake, NM..

We got ourselves up and going this morning pretty quickly (well for us anyway). I was awake about 0400, got up at 0430 and woke Ken at 0500 for coffee and blogging. Got ourselves ready, had breakfast and we were in the truck close to 0800.  Dumped and off we went.  A beautiful drive up I 25 and we got off on Highway 60. Headed east on the 2 lane road for lots of those miles. Somewhere in there we pulled over and had a nice salad lunch.

At Fort Sumner we turned left for about 15 miles up and then a left turn for 6 miles and we ended up at Sumner Lake State Park. 272 miles today. A good drive and we were settled around 1500.

Woke up to an incredible sunrise at Elephant Butte

Looking at the lower loop..these are reservation only
I think the second level has the best views..

2nd level down from us..

Beautiful..watching it change..

I 25 hardly any traffic..just the way we like it..

A rest area and some cool picnic shelters..

Highway 60..

Love watching the terrain change..

Jerry's Restaurant very popular in the tiny town of ABO..

A few nice businesses and most were shut down..

Once in awhile a nice home in the middle of nowhere

Several dry lake beds, would imagine there's lots of dust storms

I loved the town of Vaughn, New Mexico. A lot of it is old motels and gas stations. You could see in it's heyday that it was something.  I love the one story motels from way back. Too bad somebody doesn't make them back into the amazing buildings they once were. The old signs on the motels are awesome!

This one was still functional..

It appeared the old depot had been redone.

Look at that!

The Bel Air looks good..

Just so cute!

Right before entering Ft. Sumner

Nice motel..

Part of downtown Ft Sumner

Cute building..

This was built in 1939..redone later..

This is a lovely park, different from Elephant Butte.  We are in a no hookup area with a beautiful view of the lake. $10.00 a night and we're all by ourselves here. We took a drive through the water/electricity area and it's too crowded. The sites are smaller, but for $14.00 a night not too bad. There is another area, of $10.00 units but it's not open until April 1st. Huge sites!

The Lake!

Our view from the trailer..

We'll have a beautiful view of the lake while having coffee

Our little piece of paradise!

For eight dollars this could be you, right on the lake boon docking!
Tomorrow we'll travel on. Hoping to stop at Billy the Kid's grave in Fort Sumner and if the museum is open well spend a little time. If not, we'll keep heading east.  Not sure where, but headed towards Texas.

It was a great day, not too long (we don't like those) and we ended in a beautiful place we've never been before. Does it get any better..NOT.

I forgot to mention that yesterday was Eric (our middle son) and Christina's 16th wedding anniversary! Many more to come! xoxox

Have a wonderful evening, and if you're on the road Travel Safe!!
