In the early 1900s J.W. and Sarah Potter, a local Lansing couple, donated 85 acres of land along the Red cedar River to be used as a public park. The first zoo animals, a herd of elk, a bear, a pair of raccoons, and several deer, arrived in 1920. Since then the number of animals and the size of zoo has grown steadily but it remains on the small side. Some of the small and outdated early enclosures are still in use. The newer enclosures are much better. The zoo could use some sprucing up but the animals appear to be well cared for.

We happened upon one of the zoo keepers hand feeding the tiger which is done to keep him healthy by tracking how much he eats. The keeper was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions.

The zoo is accessible but some of the paved paths are in disrepair and are bumpy and uneven.
