** WARNING...way too many pictures of houses and barns**!!!
We left the rest area Wednesday at 1100..I know we're slow! LOL..We had a destination in mind and so we took off! Had a great drive, but boy does the day fly!
Some overcast skies, but still a beautiful day! |
Love the traffic on Highway 60 across Missouri.. |
I could live here!!! |

Wonderful highway across Missouri.. |
Eventually we found the National Scenic Riverways National Park in Van Buren, Missouri. We turned right off the main road (highway 60) It was only a mile or two and there was a huge flashing sign saying "Bridge Closed, turn here" so we did. It was a narrow road, not good for big RVs for sure. Twists and turns down to the river. There was a prescribed burn going on so we figured we'd turn around and head back up as we didn't want to stay in smoke. By the time we got to the bottom, no smoke. No people either LOL. We found a great electric site and took it. $7.50 a night with the America the Beautiful pass. Ken got us set up and lit the Little Red Campfire. We enjoyed the evening and then he bar b qued some excellent boneless pork ribs. It's a great park for sure. If they get the bridge fixed it might be better for big RVS but definitely not now.

These people live on the road to the campground..Poor people LOL |
We had no idea this was considered a National Park.. |
Prescribed burn |
The campground is very nice with electrical (15.00 w/o pass)
Hot showers and water by the bathrooms. |
Our site. #4 we are near the river but hard to see with growth. |
Headed out the next morning.. |
The Current River... |
This morning (Thursday) we set the alarm for 0500. No problem there as I had been up since 0300. Darn I hate nights like that.
I made up some of Ken's applesauce oatmeal muffins while waiting for the coffee to cook. In the oven and then got him up! Found we had no internet! :( We were definitely in the holler...WE were out of there by 0900...wait, WE went to the dump station. No water though, so we went back to the campground and he was able to fill 10 gallons as our hoses weren't long enough for the one faucet that was available and open (because of the time of the year).
So, our early start was definitely delayed to 1000. Oh well, that's how it goes.
We had a beautiful drive the rest of the way across Missouri, even crossed a bridge into Illinois for a heartbeat. Into Kentucky and now we're at the KOA in Bowling Green, KY. We don't stay in them often because of the price, but at least you know what you get. We want to see Mammoth Caves again. We were here several years ago when our nephew Steven graduated boot camp. We'll be here tonight, Friday and Saturday. We'll head for Don's Sunday morning but it's only about 125 miles from here. It's an easy drive!
I love these homes all across the state |
The churches are just too cute.. |
We even crossed into Illinois for a quick minute! |
Quite the bridge and the rivers! |
What a regal looking building.. |
Tennessee River.. |
Jefferson Davis Memorial sure looks like the Washington
Monument in DC..we would have pulled in, but didn't
know if there was a turnaround for trailers |
Love the black barns..We were told those are tobacco barns.
Dry the tobacco more quickly because they are black. |
This house circa 1860 was Governor Chittendon's residence..gorgeous isn't it!? It used to be all red brick.. |
Lots of historical homes in this town, along this street. |
Look at this place! I'd love to know the story!! |
Sad, an abandoned old motel :( |
The KOA here in Bowling Green, KY is lovely and very well kept. Prices are what you would expect for the area. We have a water and electrical site at the end of the row. If it was nicer weather (not windy and cold) we'd be outside with the Little Red Campfire tonight. Very quiet park. Friendly staff! Free game of mini golf every day you are there! Showers, laundry all what you would expect. Central to everything. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Our spot at the Bowling Green KY KOA.. |
